The
Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) Young Eagles Program was
launched in 1992 to give interested young people ages 8 - 17 an
opportunity to go flying in a general aviation airplane. These
flights are offered free of charge and are made possible through
the generosity of EAA member volunteers. The
Young Eagles program surpassed the goal to fly 1 million youngsters
by December 17, 2003, the 100th anniversary of the Wright Brothers
first flight. The new goal is to fly 100,000 Young Eagles during
the calendar year. In 1992, when the
program was initiated, 1,802 volunteer pilots flew 7,458 youngsters. We
are now rapidly approaching the 1.3 million Young Eagle mark and
this summer we celebrate the 15th anniversary of the
program. To-date over 40,000 volunteer pilots and an estimated
55,000 ground volunteers have introduced youngsters to the magic
of flight. Also, volunteer pilots associated
with EAA Chapter 740 at Lebanon Airport have
flown over 1,000 youngsters. |
